The Arc Otsego’s Main View Gallery & Studio’s fall exhibit, Natural Resources, opens with a public reception on Friday, September 3, from 5-7 pm at 73 Main St., Oneonta, NY. The exhibit, which features photographs of landscapes and created environmental art, found objects fetishes representing devotion to nature and plein air landscape paintings of Ouleout Creek was inspired by Main View Gallery artists’ concern over the effect of the recent oil spill on the water, wildlife and people of the Gulf. The Cooperstown Chamber Music Festival continues this Friday, Aug 13th, when Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano perform the American Songbook at the Otesaga Resort Hotel. Showtime is 7:30pm.

Songs of the Catskills - this Wednesday

Historian, musician, educator, humorist and folklorist Dave Ruch will present a free musical program on the Traditional and Historical Songs of the Catskills Region on August 11. Ruch will tell the stories behind songs of New Yorkers from days gone by. A free hands-on children’s activity precedes the performance at 5:30 pm and the concert begins at 6pm. This program is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Speakers in the Humanities program.

Sat Aug 7th brings the Annual Youth Fishing Derby to Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park, at 4pm.

Teddy Bear's Picnic Concert at 3pm on Sunday: The Oneonta Community Concert Band performs in the upper level of Wilber Park, in the pavilion. The concert features multiple groups and shows and a free drawing for a teddy bear. Donations accepted. Details: 607-432-7977.

Looking ahead:

Monday at 1pm the Sidney Memorial Public Library (in Sidney) will show a family water themed movie, Surf's Up. There is no need to sign-up; just show up for some fun.

Wed Aug 11 from 10am-2pm: The 2nd Annual Children’s Festival at Delaware Opportunities Inc (35430 State Hwy 10, Hamden, NY). The theme is "Connecting Families through Play". This free event will be held rain or shine and offers fun activities to families, caregivers, and children of all ages. Food, refreshments and much more will be available. Info: 607-746-1620.

Thursday afternoons at Hanford Mills

This August, Hanford Mills Museum is offering hands-on children's programming every Thursday afternoon from 3-4:30pm, for kids aged 5-7.

Each afternoon features demonstrations of the Mill’s waterwheel and woodworking machinery, and time to play 19th century games. Each day will feature a different take-home project to make.

No registration is required, and children can attend one, several or all Thursday afternoon programs. The fee is $6 for Museum members, $7.50 for non-members.

On August 5, children can grind corn, make a bird feeder and create with sawdust clay. On August 12, children can chip ice, which was collected in February at the Mill’s Ice Harvest, and then help make ice cream. August 19 features a tour of the Hanford House, which recreates home life in the 1920s. That day children will make their own checker/draughts game board. On August 26, children will paint signs on butter tub covers made at the Mill.
