(well since no one was hurt):
My father in law, a grounds keeper in Oneonta, was mowing Neahwa Park after last year's fireworks display, and ran over a firework that hadn't exploded! My husband, who was in nearby Damaschke Field, compared the explosion to the sound of a Navy 5 inch gun going off. Imagine his amazement to see his father's lawn mower cruising out of a huge billow of smoke. Apparently, he was going to just keep on mowing! By some accounts, the police recieved phone calls from Nader Towers, well away from the park, reporting the explosion and siting of a cloud of smoke.
I played with fireworks as a kid! It was fun. But, as seems to be the case with everything, I have a little different perspective on the matter now that I'm a parent. I'm not so comfortable watching six year olds run around with sparklers (which burn at up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, by the way).
Something to keep in mind: According to the Otsego County Department of Health, bystanders are more frequently injured by fireworks than the people who are using them.
There, you've heard my two cents on 4th of July Safety. Now let's get out and celebrate! And mow with caution the following day.

Attendance tops 2000!
Between two and three thousand people came to Wilber Park today to enjoy free ice cream, courtesy of The Daily Star and presented by Oneonta World of Learning (OWL). The PVC pipe play set was more popular than I had ever imagined it would be! I'd like to give a run-down of the entertainment, but the only act I got to hear was Maria Johnson's phenomenal storytelling--believe it or not, she didn't use a microphone, yet we were singing along all the way over by the playground.
The big news: we are now officially chartered as a children's museum by the New York State Board of Regents!!! How wonderful to be able to make the announcement during the ice cream social! If all goes well, we'll have non-profit status by the end of October.
Thank you to the many wonderful volunteers who moved tables, made phone calls, manned booths, got blisters scooping ice cream (!), painted signs, drove golf carts, and made this whole thing possible. I'd like to list our sponsors here, but I'm exhausted, it's a LONG list, and I can't seem to find the email right now. Check here tomorrow or look in The Daily Star!
A few surprises: if you couldn't find the zoomobile, it's because they had to cancel last minute. Other than than, things went surprisingly well! As always, we've learned a lot for next year. Yes, we will be doing this again!

The big news: we are now officially chartered as a children's museum by the New York State Board of Regents!!! How wonderful to be able to make the announcement during the ice cream social! If all goes well, we'll have non-profit status by the end of October.
Thank you to the many wonderful volunteers who moved tables, made phone calls, manned booths, got blisters scooping ice cream (!), painted signs, drove golf carts, and made this whole thing possible. I'd like to list our sponsors here, but I'm exhausted, it's a LONG list, and I can't seem to find the email right now. Check here tomorrow or look in The Daily Star!
A few surprises: if you couldn't find the zoomobile, it's because they had to cancel last minute. Other than than, things went surprisingly well! As always, we've learned a lot for next year. Yes, we will be doing this again!
Before I forget: mark your calendars for Saturday July 18th, when OWL presents Books Alive!, an interactive concert. The event is at 11am at Bugbee Children's Center, State St, Oneonta, in their beautiful auditorium. Lee Knight has written original songs to your child's favorite stories. Ice Cream Social Sunday
The Ice Cream Social is this Sunday, June 7th, 1-5pm in Wilber Park, Oneonta NY--free ice cream and family friendly entertainment, including:
Door prizes (be sure to pick up a free ticket when you arrive)
Remote control aircraft (lower level of the park)
Dance troupes, theater, music, a mime, and storytelling at the portable stage
Old time games with the Farmer's Museum
Utica Zoomobile
Paper doll making activity
Mask making art activities
Woodworking projects
Scavenger hunt
PVC pipe building play set
Make your own bubble wands
Disability awareness obstacle course
Informational tables by 17 child and family centered organizations
Park in the Middle School lot and take the shuttle to the ice cream social or follow the nature trail.
Directions: From I-88 Exit 15, follow the sign toward Oneonta. Continue on Maple Street. Turn right at Center Street. Turn left at East Street. Go 0.6 miles and turn Right at the stop light. Turn right again to enter the Middle School parking lot.
In the event of severe weather, the ice cream social will be held in SUNY Oneonta's Hunt Union Ballroom.
The Ice Cream Social is being presented by Oneonta World of Learning (OWL), a children's museum coming soon to Oneonta, NY, with generous sponsorship by community businesses and The Daily Star.
